If you only started to explore CDSware, then I would recommend you to
install the CVS version which is MySQLdb 1.2.x friendly already.
CDSware CVS runs with native Debian Sarge Apache/PHP/Python/MySQL
packages without having to downgrade anything, see:
http://cdsware.cern.ch/lists/project-cdsware-users/archive/msg00507.shtml
Please tell me if you would prefer a test tarball rather than CVS.
As for the stability of the CVS version and its approximate release
timeline, please see:
http://cdsware.cern.ch/lists/project-cdsware-users/archive/msg00579.shtml
and the bottom of:

Please note that we have not tested MySQL 5.0.x yet, only MySQL 4.0.x
and 4.1.x. Dunno whether CDSware CVS works with MySQL 5.0.x out of
the box.

Yes, it is. Roughly speaking, CDSware runs a single common catalogue
repository and can provide partial `virtual' views on the document
corpus based on e.g. authors' institutions or projects they worked on
or any other information that is stored with the records. Virtual
collections can be defined via full search syntax and so they can
become as complex as the search queries. E.g. one can define a
collection of papers produced by a certain institute during certain
years on a certain topic, excluding draft material, if required.
Moreover, you can define a virtual collection to a virtual collection,
making many regular and virtual branches, if that eases the site
navigation for the end users. More thoughts on such a complex setup
can be found in:

Best regards
